How to solve the problem of fouling in EPDM rubber product molds

发布时间: 2025-08-23 15:28
EPDM rubber has a low density and can be filled with large amounts of rubber oil and fillers with minimal changes in the compound's physical and mechanical properties. However, in actual production, some of the rubber oil used for filling may contain volatile components, leading to mold buildup. How can this be addressed? What other factors can cause mold buildup when using EPDM to produce rubber products? How can rubber product manufacturers address this issue?

1. Tips for Selecting Rubber Filler Oil

When filling EPDM products with large amounts of rubber oil, rubber product manufacturers can choose low-volatile rubber oil to reduce buildup. If volatile rubber oil is necessary, the amount can be reduced or oil-based rubber can be used instead of volatile rubber oil. In actual production, petroleum-based rubber oils tend to evaporate at high temperatures.

2. Tips for Selecting Other Compounding Ingredients

The curing system for EPDM rubber products consists of a vulcanizing agent and an accelerator. The addition of some accelerators, such as TMTD (which is prone to frosting), can cause mold buildup. Therefore, a curing system that is less prone to buildup should be selected. Try using accelerator TBTD instead of TMTD. Use release agents prudently to reduce mold buildup. Appropriate use of specialty additives can effectively reduce buildup.

3. Improving the Hot Tear Resistance of EPDM Rubber

Experiments have shown that the better the hot tear resistance of a rubber compound, the easier it is to demold and the less likely it is to accumulate mold buildup. Improving the hot tear resistance of EPDM rubber can reduce mold buildup. In actual production, adding large amounts of large-particle mineral fillers to EPDM rubber compounds can reduce the compound's hot tear resistance. Therefore, it is necessary to reduce the filler dosage and take appropriate measures to improve the compound's hot tear resistance and reduce mold buildup.

4. Adjusting Vulcanization Conditions

When producing EPDM rubber products, especially injection-type EPDM products, the rubber is vulcanized at a lower temperature for a longer time, making it less likely to cause mold buildup. When using EPDM reclaimed rubber alongside virgin EPDM rubber to produce rubber products, rubber product manufacturers must consider the basic properties of both reclaimed and virgin rubber to optimize vulcanization conditions.

Currently, many EPDM rubber product manufacturers are using reclaimed EPDM rubber to reduce raw material costs. In actual production, EPDM product formulations containing reclaimed EPDM rubber use less rubber filler and rubber oil than those made with pure virgin rubber, which can reduce mold buildup to a certain extent. However, it's important to note that when using reclaimed EPDM rubber to reduce costs in EPDM products, it's crucial to avoid using reclaimed rubber softened with volatile rubber oil to avoid mold buildup.

Compared to virgin EPDM rubber, EPDM reclaimed rubber offers superior fluidity, high plasticity, and low heat sensitivity. Its use in EPDM product production not only reduces raw material costs but also improves compound processing. Later, I will have the opportunity to discuss with you the techniques of reducing the cost of using EPDM recycled rubber in EPDM rubber products.
